Yet, there are limits in their capacity to accurately estimate water storage and dynamics because of their coarse spatial resolution, simplified physics, and an incomplete knowledge of atmospheric forcing and input parameters. These errors can be diminished using data assimilation techniques. The model’s most sensitive parameters should be identified beforehand. The objective of the present study is to highlight key parameters impacting the river-routing scheme Total Runoff Integrating Pathways (TRIP) while simulating river water height and discharge as a function of time focusing on the annual cycle. Thus, a sensitivity analysis based on the decomposition of model output variance (using a method called ANOVA) is utilized and applied over the Amazon basin. Tested parameters are perturbed with correcting factors. First, parameter-correcting coefficients are considered uniform over the entire basin. The results are specific to the TRIP model and show that geomorphological parameters explain around 95\% of the water height variance with purely additive contributions, all year long, with a dominating impact of the river Manning coefficient (40\%), the riverbed slope (35\%), and the river width (20\%). The results also show that discharge is essentially sensitive to the groundwater time constant that makes up more than 90\% of the variance. To a lesser extent, in rising/falling flow period, the discharge is also sensitive to geomorphological parameters. Next, the Amazon basin is divided into nine subregions and the sensitivity analysis is carried out for regionalized parameter-correcting coefficients. The specific focus of the present study is on evaluating the new features of FIREFLY at field scale in a controlled grassland fire experiment known as FireFlux I. FIREFLY features the following components: an Eulerian front-tracking solver that treats the fire as a propagating front and uses Rothermel’s model for the rate of spread (ROS); a series of observations of the fire front position (based here on high-resolution fireline data previously generated by validated numerical simulations); and a data assimilation algorithm based on an ensemble Kalman filter configured in a parameter estimation mode to address model bias and uncertainties in the input data to the ROS model. In this work, FIREFLY is modified to allow for an estimation of spatially-distributed surface wind speed and direction. To generate a reliable ensemble and ensure an accurate correction, the ensemble Kalman filter requires sampling truncated probability density functions as well as localizing, i.e., dynamically selecting the areas where the wind parameters are corrected. Results show that the spatialized parameter estimation approach allows for a successful reconstruction of observed fireline position and shape as well as a substantial improvement in the forecast performance compared to the standalone fire spread model. Results also show that the inferred wind parameters may not be accurate and should be viewed as effective values that incorporate multiple sources of uncertainties. There is the modeling challenge associated with providing accurate representations of the complex multi-physics processes that govern wildfire dynamics. There is also the data challenge associated with providing accurate estimates of the in put data required by the models (e.g. biomass fuel moisture, near-surface meteorology). For this purpose, the uncertainty in regional-scale wildfire behavior modeling must be quantified and reduced. An ensemble-based data assimilation algorithm (i.e. ensemble Kalman filter –EnKF) is implemented for the sequential estimation of the input parameters of a fire spread model carried out when fire front observations are available. This algorithm requires the stochastic estimation of the covariances between the model input parameters and the model outputs (generally through a Monte Carlo method). The difficulty with the crude Monte Carlo method is due to the convergence, for instance the approximation of quantile could be time-consuming due to possible model non-linearity. Wediscuss the use of techniques like surrogate modeling (Polynomial Chaos–PC) to build numerical representations of the wildfire behavior model,which are used in the framework of the EnKF algorithm to accuratelyestimate model error statistics.
