“Impact of Heat Transfer on Combustion Instabilities – Progress and Challenges”

by Christian Kraus, IMFT (Toulouse)

Abstract:

Combustion instabilities are still major challenges in the design and operation of modern combustors. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is a powerful method that allows investigating combustion instabilities and improving the understanding of their driving mechanisms. However, combustion instabilities are strongly influenced by heat transfer processes, which are often neglected in numerical simulations. This leads to uncertainties regarding the accuracy of the results and the prediction capabilities of LES. The talk addresses this topic by giving examples of previous studies that illustrate the influence of heat transfer on combustion dynamics. Furthermore, it discusses results of reactive LESs of a laboratory-scale swirl combustor (KIT-Burner), in order to highlight the impact of different thermal boundary conditions (adiabatic, heat loss, coupled simulations with AVTP) on the unstable thermoacoustic modes in the combustor. The presented numerical results were obtained with AVBP in the context of the ERC advanced grant INTECOCIS (http://intecocis.inp-toulouse.fr/).
