CERFACS is starting a European industry/research project in 2025 with NTNU (Norway), Ansaldo (Italy), Aachen (Germany), SINTEF (Norway), Berlin (Germany) … to study the combustion of hydrogen in gas turbines. This approach, which will decarbonize the production of power (for aircraft) and electricity (for ground-based turbines), requires fundamental studies on how hydrogen mixes and burns with air at high pressure. CERFACS will conduct a thesis on this subject within the H2 group of the CERFACS CFD team, where more than ten PhD students work. This internship is the first step of this thesis.

The chosen method is direct simulation (DNS): the CERFACS intern will calculate flames attached to high-pressure injector lips and determine whether the flame can be subjected to blow-off (the flame stalls) or flashbacks (the flame goes up into the injection tubes and destroys them). This problem is omnipresent today for all H2 applications and although INSIGH2T focuses on turbines, the knowledge obtained will apply to all H2 applications.

The intern will learn high-performance simulation, combustion, combustion technologies of gas turbines. An example of AVBP result on a H2 chamber is given below (courtesy: J. Bertsch, CERFACS PhD student).
