Context

Evaluating risks when introducing new battery technology is key to help transitioning towards greener energy storage systems. This internship is a collaboration between the french battery manufacturer SAFT and CERFACS, aiming at better understanding the thermal runaway behavior of newly developed Sodium-ion batteries.

The internship will be funded by SAFT for a duration of 6 months, preferably from March to September 2025. The first half of the project will be performed at CERFACS, in Toulouse (March-May), before joining SAFT R&D teams in Bordeaux (June-September).

Working program

  • Understanding safety questions related to battery thermal runaway, and wrap up tests performed on new technologies (eg. Sodium-ion, …)
  • Characterize chemical and thermal properties of thermal runaway products (flammability, toxicity, …) for these new technologies and compare to existing (eg. Lithium-ion, Nickel-Cadmium, …)
  • Define simplification strategies able to render the specificities of the products obtained.
  • Conclude on a risk analysis and a list of solutions to help mitigate the risks (eg. CFD simulation of dispersion / explosions on one of the many branches of SAFT products).

This project is intended to be followed by a PhD Thesis hosted at CERFACS in Toulouse.
