Abstract

GIT is a distributed revision control and source code management system. It was initially designed for Linux kernel development and is particularly adapted to multi-site and multi-developer environments. In the morning, the basic knowledge of source code management are taught, presenting most GIT functionalities with many illustrations. A brief comparison with other management tools (Mercurial,CVS,SVN) is also proposed. In the afternoon, a hands-­on session with detailed exercices is organized to illustrate the main concepts.

Objective of the training

The objectives of this course are to help the participants learn how to use GIT in order to manage the development of a multi-site and multi-developer code.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this course, you will be able to :

  • to use the essentials of GIT for all your source code developments;
  • choose the best strategy concerning the creation of different branches;
  • solve the conflicts during the “commit phases”;
  • work in small teams or big teams with GIT.

Target participants

This training session is for engineers, physicists, computer scientists and numerical analysts who wish to manage the development of their codes.

Teaching methods

The training is an alternation of theoretical presentations and practical work. A multiple choice question allows the final evaluation. The training room is equipped with computers, the work can be done in sub-groups of two people.

Prerequisites

In order to follow this course, you need to:

  • be familiar with the use of basic Linux commands
  • the training can take place in French or in English depending on the audience, level B2 of CEFR is required.

The work of CERFACS, in collaboration with SAFRAN, on the hybridization of physical simulation software with machine learning techniques, has been cited in the magazine l'Usine Nouvelle, and is included in a detailed write-up called "Simulation and machine learning combine their strengths" in the magazine Industries et Technologies this month. This work, supervised at CERFACS by Corentin Lapeyre, and at SAFRAN by Stéphane Richard, is at the forefront of developments in terms of exploiting artificial intelligence tools for the simulation and design of physical systems.Read more
