Australia is the driest of all inhabited continents, with droughts occurring sequentially with a period of roughly ten years. Simultaneously, the continent is prone to devastating floods, leading to hundreds of billions of damages each year.  This presentation presents an overview of a number of modelling projects, with as overall objective the development of enhanced tools to improve the prediction and management of both floods and droughts.

Valentijn Pauwels received his MSc. in Agricultural Engineering from Ghent University, Belgium, in 1994.  He then obtained his PhD. in Civil Engineering and Operations Research from Princeton University, USA, in 1999.  He was then awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the Foundation for Scientific Research from the Flemish Community, which he undertook at Ghent University, where he became a Lecturer in 2005 and a Senior Lecturer in 2010.  In September 2012 he moved to Monash University, where he is currently an Associate Professor.  His research interest is water management, with a focus on floods.
