Chemistry reduction using ARCANE

  Tuesday 15 November 2022

  Training

Cerfacs is Qualiopi certified for its training activities

Deadline for registration: 15 days before the starting date of each training
Duration : 1 day / (7 hours)

Abstract

ARCANE (Analytical Reduction of Chemistry : Automatic, Nice and Efficient) is a chemistry reduction code co-developed by CERFACS and Cornell University which aims at generating chemical kinetics mechanisms that are computationally affordable for Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) or Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of reacting flows. It can also be used in any configuration involving chemical kinetics such as steam cracking or bio-chemistry problems. ARCANE is written in python and relies on Cantera for the chemistry calculations. Participants will get an overview of what is possible to do with ARCANE, from the underlying reduction methods available and the insights on the code architecture to hands-on sessions enabling reduction script generation, chemistry reduction, and reduced chemistry analysis.

Objective of the training

This 1-day (7 hours) training course aims at presenting the reduction code ARCANE as well as the main reduction methods used to generate reduced kinetics computationally affordable for reacting simulations. The participants will learn how to employ ARCANE and use its post-processing tools to analyse the properties of the reduced kinetics obtained. The detailed program is available here.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this course, you will be able to:

    • use the Python interface of ARCANE.
    • set-up a reduction case, from the definition of the target cases to the use of the reduction techniques.
    • analyse the obtained reduced reaction mechanisms by using the post-processing tools of ARCANE.
    • perform your first reduction of your favorite detailed mechanism or one provided by the trainers.

Teaching methods

The training is an alternation of theoretical and practical courses. A multiple choice question allows the final evaluation. The training room is equipped with computers, the work can be done in sub-groups of two people.

Referent teacher: Eleonore Riber

Target participants

This training session is for students, researchers and engineers who wish to learn about reduction techniques for chemical scheme reduction and how to use the reduction code ARCANE to efficiently and automatically reduce chemical kinetics and to analyse the reduced schemes obtained.
