ERC 2024: A 4th ERC Advanced Grant awarded to IMFT and CERFACS

  15 April 2024

The results of the ERC were released on April 11 (): 31 proposals were selected for France in The Advanced Grants category. IMFT and CERFACS (principal investigator: Thierry Poinsot) have obtained a 4th ERC Advanced Grant for the Safe-H2 project, dedicated to the study of accident scenarios linked to the combustion of hydrogen (fires, explosions). This work will begin in January 2025 and will bring together experiments and simulation with AVBP around these critical themes for the decarbonization of our society thanks to H2. The Safe-H2 logo illustrates the central theme of Safe-H2: how to domesticate the power of the H2 tiger ...

CERFACS takes part in the launch of the first operational space hydrology center HydroVenture !

  28 March 2024

Launch of HydroVenture on March 28th 2024 ! Europe's first operational space hydrology center for global water moitoring and management !➡️ 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐇𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐕𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞?It's an alliance of 14 partners, all major players in the space and research industries: CS GROUP, Magellium, vorteX-io, BRL Ingénierie, CERFACS, CLS Group, Hydro Matters, MEOSS, ICube-SERTIT and the Data Terra  research infrastructure (CNES, CNRS - Centre national de la recherche scientifique, INRAE, IRD).➡️ 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐛𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐕𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞?This initiative aims to revolutionise our understanding and management of water resources on a global scale by developing a sector of excellence in space hydrology and offering new products and services for observing, modelling and managing the planet's water resources in real time. All of this is in line with the objectives of France 2030 and the European Destination Earth programme, while contributing to the United Nations's early warning services.➡️ 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐇𝐲𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐕𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞?Today, water resources are only partially measured and monitored. HydroVenture provides a new response by combining spatial data and in situ data to monitor continental hydrological systems in real time. This innovative approach will overcome current challenges, notably data heterogeneity and the limitations of terrestrial sensor networks.Thank you to the speakers, Gwénaël Souillé (Director of Business Development B.U. Space at CS-Group), Joël Dorandeu (Director of the Earth Observation Unit at Magellium), Guillaume Valladeau (President and co-founder of vorteX-io), Cherchali Selma (Head of the Earth Observation programme at CNES, co-chair of the Data Terra Research Infrastructure Steering Committee) and Frédéric Huynh (Director of the Data Terra Research Infrastructure).ℹ️ More information on our website: www.hydroventure.euFollow our news with #HydroVenture

Cerfacs wins the bronze medal in the Allons-Y A Vélo winter 2024 edition

  7 March 2024

For the 5th time in 4 years, Cerfacs is on the podium of the "Allons-Y À Vélo" (AYAV) enterprise challenge in its category (100-500 employees) with a bronze medal for its cycling regularity. During the  AYAV period (5-9 February 2024), almost 30% of Cerfacs employees came to work by bike. Cerfacs was also on the AYAV podium with a 3rd position in winter 2022 and in spring 2021, 2022 and 2023. Details about Allons-Y A Vélo can be found here. This nice success is in-line with Cerfacs participation to the Programme Employeur Pro-Vélo that provides fundings for new bike racks and bicycle repair workshops. Our audit is on March 22 and we are going for a silver label ! More good news to follow soon ...

HYDROGEN WEEK IN TOULOUSE

  1 March 2024

The hydrogen week organized jointly by IMFT and CERFACS has gathered 150 people at IMFT and on Zoom for three days to discuss novel CFD methods for hydrogen-air flames. A course was given by hydrogen experts on tuesday and the comparison of 14 CFD codes with the experimental data of IMFT, built during the ERC advanced grant SCIROCCO (cerfacs.fr/scirocco) was discussed on wednesday. On thursday, the capacity of CFD codes to compute  high pressure hydrogen flames was specifically addressed through intense discussions between CFD experts and experimentalists. Link to the site: Tuesday  classes will soon be available on this site (recording of conferences and pdf of presentations)

The AVBP code of CERFACS to be used in the Synergy Grant Hyrope

  17 November 2023

The AVBP code of CERFACS to be used in the SYNERGY GRANT HYROPE (IMF Toulouse, ETH Zurich, NTNU Trondheim, TU Darmstadt), accepted by the EU in October 2023 on new high-pressure sequential burners for low carbon power production. HYROPE (Hydrogen Under Pressure) is an ERC Synergy which involves four European partners: James Dawson (NTNU, Trondheim), Andreas Dreizler (TU Darmstadt), Nicolas Noiray (ETH Zurich) and Laurent Selle (IMFT, Toulouse). HYROPE targets high pressure combustion for two low-carbon fuels: hydrogen and ammonia. From an application point of view, HYROPE aims to enable the use of low-carbon fuels for the production of very high power electricity (>500MW) in staged combustion gas turbines.  The AVBP code of CERFACS will be used to perform DNS and LES of all flames tested experimentally during HYROPE, a proof of the place of AVBP in the academic community.

Cerfacs at the “Académie des Sciences” to discuss wildland fires

  6 November 2023

A conference-debate entitled "Modelling and monitoring forest fires" will be held at the Académie des Sciences on December 5th, 2023. Its aim is to provide an overview of scientific research into the characterization, prevention, prediction and remote sensing of wildland fires.Mélanie Rochoux, researcher in the CECI unit at Cerfacs, will talk about new simulation tools such as coupled atmospheric modeling and data assimilation to help better understand and anticipate wildland fire behavior. Her research work is carried out in close collaboration with CNRM/Météo-France, notably as part of the ANR FIREFLY project which has just started.
