Laurent Terray, laureate of the Académie des Sciences’ Medal for the Sciences of the Universe!

Laurent Terray, Director of the Climat, Environnement, Couplages, Incertitudes (CECI (CNRS, Cerfacs)) laboratory, has been awarded the Académie des Sciences' Médaille des Sciences de l'Univers, awarded each year to a representative of this community. A pioneer in the first coupled ocean-atmosphere climate simulations, he has made a major contribution to our understanding of the mechanisms of climate variability. Lead author of Chapter 10 of the latest IPCC report, “From Global to Regional Scales”, and affiliated with the Climate and Global Dynamics Division of NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research) in the USA, he continues to influence climate research through various European projects and the TRACCS program, where he sits on the executive committee.

New European project UrbanAIR

Cerfacs on the new front of AI and very high resolution modelling of urban flows A new European project, UrbanAIR*, led by TU Delft and in which Cerfacs is involved alongside CNRM and LAERO, has just been selected by the European Commission.This new project will enable Cerfacs to explore emulation strategies combining deep learning, uncertainty quantification and multi-fidelity simulations based on very high-resolution Meso-NH urban simulations. The key idea is to be able to generate and study plausible wind and air quality scenarios on the scale of European cities such as Barcelona. This project will enable Cerfacs to scale up the emulation strategies studied on experimental cases, as in Eliott Lumet's thesis (). * UrbanAIR "Urban simulation for air quality and heat resilience strategies" submitted to the call "HORIZON-INFRA-2024-TECH-01-03: New Digital Twins for Destination Earth".
SWOT Science Team meeting on going

CERFACS is participating in the 2024 SWOT Science Team Meeting at the Friday Conference Center in Chapel Hill, NC, USA. The SWOT satellite, a collaboration between NASA and CNES, is delivering unprecedented images of ocean and continental surface water elevation. The SWOT mission is expected to substantially improve the precision of predictions regarding the timing and locations of flooding in Earth's rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. Friday morning, 26 April 2024: we are delighted to welcome Christine Arrighi, MP for the 9th constituency of Haute-Garonne, and a delegation from Météo-France to discuss the issue of forest and vegetation fires.This visit is the culmination of work carried out since the end of 2023 by a trio set up under the aegis of the Office parlementaire d’évaluation des Choix scientifiques et technologiques (OPECST), comprising Christine Arrighi, Jean-Claude André, a member of the Académie des Sciences and former Director of Cerfacs, and Mélanie Rochoux, a researcher in the GLOBC team.
ERC 2024: A 4th ERC Advanced Grant awarded to IMFT and CERFACS

The results of the ERC were released on April 11 (): 31 proposals were selected for France in The Advanced Grants category. IMFT and CERFACS (principal investigator: Thierry Poinsot) have obtained a 4th ERC Advanced Grant for the Safe-H2 project, dedicated to the study of accident scenarios linked to the combustion of hydrogen (fires, explosions). This work will begin in January 2025 and will bring together experiments and simulation with AVBP around these critical themes for the decarbonization of our society thanks to H2. Cerfacs obtains the silver label from the program Objectif Employeur Pro-Vélo (OEPV)

Cerfacs has just been awarded the silver label from the program Objectif Employeur Pro-Vélo (OEPV) in recognition of its cycling-to-work policy ! OEPV is a national program managed by the FUB (Fédération des Usagers de la Bicyclette) and funded with Energy Savings Certificates which aims to support 4,500 employers (public, private and associations) in the development of a cycling culture within their establishments. A diagnosis and an action plan over 2023-2025 have been drawn up as part of this programme. Actions aimed at improving the lives of Cerfacs cyclists have been carried out, such as the installation of good quality hoops, and will be continued in the years to come !

Sophie Valcke, research engineer in Cerfacs Climate modelling and global change team, has been appointed as member of the Research and Innovation Advisory Group (RIAG). The RIAG, which is composed at maximum of 12 members draws up the draft of the multiannual strategic research and innovation agenda of the EuroHPC JU, provides advice on potential international cooperation activities, issues recommendations to promote training and education priorities in HPC and quantum computing technologies and applications, and organises public consultations open to all public and private stakeholders having an interest in the fields of HPC and quantum computing.
