Gene around the world at CERFACS

Gene Golub

Foreword:

Gene was a frequent visitor to France and we are delighted to join in the worldwide celebration of his birthday on February 29th.

The Parallel Algorithms Team at CERFACS and our colleagues at ENSEEIHT/IRIT have had a particularly close association with Gene over many years. Among the events organized in common over the last years, Gene attended the two St Girons meetings, meetings during the International Year of Linear Algebra, several of the annual Sparse Days, and both anniversary meetings of CERFACS, giving a keynote plenary talk at the 20th Anniversary meeting in October last year.

The status of numerical linear algebra in France has increased greatly over the past few years and Gene has been instrumental in encouraging this, particularly with his strong support for students. He had an amazing ability to communicate and inspire young people, often influencing greatly their future career. It is thus, with great pleasure although tinged with deep sadness, that we offer a series of lectures all presented by graduate students to commemorate this day. These students represent several centres in France and their affiliations are given in the programme (to come) for the day.

There will be other events to commemorate Gene in France later this year from a Burns Supper tribute at CERFACS to a dedication at the next Sparse Days which will be a Workshop of the International VECPAR meeting in June.
